The annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list is again filled with mesothelioma cancer centers of excellence.

The U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Honor Roll was published the first week of August. This annual list is highly respected within the health care and cancer treatment industry showcasing the best hospitals, plus rankings for 15 adult medical specialties.

The U.S. News & World Report does not have rankings specifically for the best mesothelioma hospitals. Those specialties include lung cancer and gastrointestinal cancer, which can be viewed similarly to types of mesothelioma. This is a rare and aggressive type of cancer that starts in the lining of the lungs, abdominal cavity or heart.

There’s also a category for general cancer treatment.

U.S. News & World Report ranked the top 50 hospitals out of nearly 900 for general cancer treatment. This list is of the top cancer hospitals for providing care to people with malignant conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, breast, kidney, colon, prostate, pancreatic, head and neck, orthopedic, uterine and ovarian cancers.

Best Hospitals in America for Lung Surgery (Pleural Mesothelioma)

Pleural mesothelioma is a type of mesothelioma that starts in the lining of the lungs (the pleura). Tumors in this lining quickly spread to the lungs.

Treatment options for mesothelioma are mainly surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy. Other options such as CAR T-cell therapy and virotherapy are in clinical trials.

The main surgery for pleural mesothelioma is pleurectomy/decortication. This type of surgery removes the lining of the lungs, which is where the cancer originates. Surgeons strip this lining off the lungs and chest wall.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a type of mesothelioma that originates in the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum). Tumors in this lining quickly spread to organs within the abdomen, which are part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma typically includes surgery and heated chemotherapy. The type of surgery used is cytoreduction with HIPEC, or HIPEC surgery. This type of surgery is considered a peritoneal surface malignancy surgery, which is under the gastroenterology division at most cancer centers.
