High‑Volume Center for Mesothelioma Surgery

Mount Sinai is one of the leading cancer institutions for mesothelioma treatment and support care. The pair of specialists on staff perform more than 50 surgeries per year. Dr. Flores said he operates on approximately 50 of 80 pleural mesothelioma cases coming to him. Dr. Labow said prior to leaving Mt. Sinai that he operated on a handful of peritoneal mesothelioma cases.

The primary oncologist for pleural mesothelioma is Dr. Jorge Gomez. Dr. Kenneth Rosenzweig is the primary radiation oncologist.

“He invented the radiation protocol for mesothelioma,” Dr. Flores said.

The treatment team also includes nurses and an anesthesiologist. Dr. Labow said the group is so accustomed to HIPEC surgery that it was labeled “routine” despite being a complex operation. He usually worked with Dr. Peter Kozuch for peritoneal mesothelioma.

“The fact it got so routine says to me we’ve done our job,” he said.

Focus on Coordinating With Team

Andrea Wolfe is the program coordinator and a thoracic surgeon. Her role is an example of how Mount Sinai’s staff wants to make patients and their families more at ease.

“We’re trying to make it a multidisciplinary thing where you get every aspect of your mesothelioma care here at Mount Sinai,” Dr. Flores explained.

Dr. Flores performs both extrapleural pneumonectomy surgery and pleurectomy/decortication surgery for pleural mesothelioma. He also coordinates with the medical oncologist for systemic chemotherapy and immunotherapy after surgery.

Dr. Labow and his colleagues performed cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC, which sends a high concentration of chemotherapy into the abdominal cavity. This prevents it from circulating in the bloodstream and killing healthy blood cells.

“This allows for fewer side effects and better killing of the cancer cells,” Dr. Labow said prior to leaving Mount Sinai. “It can also reduce the need for regular chemotherapy, although it is usually given in addition to regular chemo, and not instead of it. It gives us a new option to fight the most difficult to treat cancers.”
