History of Asbestos Exposure for Workers and Others

A worker in safety goggles operates a lathe in a factory, focused on shaping a metal piece.

Asbestos was a popular additive in several industries during the heart of the 20th century. Workers in construction, insulation, electrical work, plumbing, maintenance, factory work, and more trades, and military service members, were exposed every day to asbestos, which is now known to cause cancer.

Other groups at risk of exposure are family and close friends or workers exposed to asbestos. Workers can carry asbestos fibers on their clothes, skin, or hair into a home, car, or automobile shared by another person.

The last main group at risk of asbestos exposure is people who used certain products made with talc. Asbestos is a natural mineral found in the earth’s soil, same as talc. Asbestos can mix with talc during mining and contaminate products made with talcum powder. Products tested for asbestos include baby powders, some cosmetics, and some kids toys, including crayons.

    Mesothelioma and Other Asbestos Diseases

One of the most well-known types of asbestos exposure diseases is mesothelioma. This rare type of cancer is only caused by exposure to asbestos. There are approximately 2,500 people in the United States diagnosed each year with mesothelioma. The survival rates for this cancer are lower than for other types due to how quickly the disease spreads.

The majority of people diagnosed with mesothelioma worked jobs during the 20th century that involved being near or even directly handling asbestos. Others are friends and family of workers, and people who used specific talc products.

Asbestos can also cause lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and a lung-scarring disease. Asbestos is linked to approximately 40,000 deaths each year in the United States.
