People with mesothelioma understandably want and should seek the best: the best treatment, best doctors and best cancer centers.

You can check all of those boxes by searching through the U.S. News & World Report “Honor Roll” of best hospitals.

The 2020 version of the annual Honor Roll includes recognizable names in mesothelioma treatment and a few new ones.

The ranking for the “Best Hospitals Honor Roll” is below. You can find more information about many of these hospitals in our list of Mesothelioma Centers of Excellence.

The institutions that include full-fledged mesothelioma programs and specialists are bolded:

  1. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota)

Michigan Medicine is one of the new additions to the list. The hospital recently started a mesothelioma treatment program with the hiring of specialist Dr. Elliot Wakeam, who worked at Princess Margaret Cancer Center in Toronto.

Mayo Clinic, NYU Langone, UCSF, UCLA, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital were all on last year’s list of the best hospitals in the country.

How Hospitals Made the List

The Honor Roll determines the top 20 hospitals in the country based on a point system. Hospitals received points for being:

  • Nationally ranked in one of 16 specialties
  • Listed as “high performing” in one of 10 procedures and conditions

Hospitals ranked for a specialty, procedure or condition based on specific criteria, such as:

  • 30-day survival
  • Patient experience
  • Volume of patients
  • Nurse staffing
  • Technological advancements
  • Professional recognition

A few of the specialties or procedures are closely related to mesothelioma. The hospitals ranking well for those categories are good picks for treating your cancer.

For instance, the Mayo Clinic ranks first for pulmonology and lung surgery with a 100/100 score. Pulmonology and lung surgery may include treatment for pleural mesothelioma. This form of mesothelioma develops near the lungs. Surgery for this cancer may involve removing a lung.

We list which mesothelioma hospitals received recognition for this category. There’s also a general cancer ranking, which we’ll provide as well.
