National Nurses Week is this week, which is a time to recognize the dedication, compassion, and resilience of nurses across all specialties. For me, it is also a moment to reflect on the privilege I have of walking alongside patients and families facing one of the most challenging diagnoses of cancer: a rare type called mesothelioma.

As a registered nurse navigator with Mesothelioma Guide, my role extends far beyond providing clinical information. I serve as a trusted point of contact, a guide through complex decisions, and a source of support during an incredibly overwhelming time.

Receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis often brings uncertainty, fear, and a mountain of questions. Many patients and families are not only unfamiliar with the disease, but also unsure of where to turn for trusted information or specialized care. This is where nurse navigation becomes essential.

I help patients understand their diagnosis in a way that is clear and approachable. From explaining pathology reports to discussing treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or clinical trials, my goal is to ensure patients feel informed – not intimidated. Knowledge can be empowering, especially when it comes to making important decisions about care.

Beyond education, I assist in connecting patients with top mesothelioma specialists and treatment centers. Because this is a rare cancer, access to experienced physicians can make a meaningful difference. I work to bridge that gap, helping families navigate referrals, coordinate appointments, and explore all available options.

Providing valuable support goes far beyond logistics. Some of the most important moments in my role come from simply being present – listening to concerns, answering late-night questions, and offering reassurance when the path forward is unclear. Families are often balancing emotional, physical, and financial stress, and having someone who understands the healthcare system, and genuinely cares, can ease that burden.

My passion for this work is deeply personal. Like many in health care, my journey has been shaped by experiencing the gaps in care and resources during my mom’s cancer journey. That perspective continues to drive my commitment to ensuring no patient or family feels alone in this process.

During National Nurses Week, I am keenly aware that nursing is not only about clinical skill, but also about connection, advocacy, and compassion. Nurse navigators play a unique role in oncology care by bringing all of these elements together – helping patients move forward with confidence, clarity, and support.

To every patient and family I have had the honor to work with, thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey. It is a responsibility I carry with deep respect and dedication every single day.
