Measles and Mesothelioma
The Mayo Clinic has been hard at work developing a novel treatment involving the measles virus. By engineering the virus, doctors have created a version of the virus, known as MV-NIS, that attacks mesothelioma cells. The drug is administered through catheters in the chest that also allow relief from the buildup of fluid in the chest cavity.
If MV-NIS proves successful in slowing mesothelioma cells, it could be combined with chemotherapy in the future. Aside from the chemotherapy doing its job, it would also allow MV-NIS to be more effective since chemotherapy suppressed the immune system, which attacks the measles virus. The Mayo Clinic, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, is the only treatment center conducting trials of this drug.
