Get to Know Dr. Avi Lebenthal
Dr. Lebenthal is considered one of the top mesothelioma specialists in the world and has multiple decades of medical training. He began his education in 1993 at Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem, Israel, and earned a medical degree in general surgery from Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City in 2000. Dr. Lebenthal then became board certified in general surgery in 2004.
From 2004-2008, he participated in a fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he currently works. He has also completed fellowships focusing on cardiothoracic surgery and minimally invasive thoracic surgery at the hospital. The 20-year-plus medical professional is also a surgery professor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Lebenthal is well-regarded by all of his patients, many of whom he has helped live well past their initial prognoses. What distinguishes him from other specialists is his work with veterans, the largest single group afflicted by mesothelioma.
Dr. Lebenthal is a veteran of the Israeli Defense Force and served in the country’s military for 18 years. He served as major, his highest ranking honor, and received a “letter of distinction” for caring for wounded soldiers while he was under fire.
In 2010, he created the Boston VA mesothelioma program. He has received three “Golden Heart Awards” to recognize the care he has provided to out-of-state veterans with mesothelioma.
