A website called CaringBridge is bringing a new method of communication between loved ones when there is a health crisis. Social media allows us to share our experiences and allows us to stay connected to our family and friends. CaringBridge brings the benefits of social media to patients and their families.

An Easy Way to Keep Family and Friends Updated

CaringBridge allows a user to create a personal website that allows family and friends to receive updates about their progress during their health journey. In return, a user’s loved ones are able to offer their support and words of encouragement during difficult times.

In an instance, a mesothelioma patient might learn that they will be starting chemotherapy as soon as possible. Instead of spending time notifying family and friends individually, CaringBridge would allow a diagnosed patient to create and maintain a website where they can notify all of their family and friends at once about their medical milestones and their prognosis.

Reducing Stress During a Medical Crisis

The goal of CaringBridge is to create a community that is easily accessible to family and friends. It helps keep them updated about a health crisis their loved one may be experiencing. When a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, there are always tons of questions and concerns; CaringBridge is an outlet that helps reduce stress and helps answer questions that family and friends might be having. CaringBridge does this by:

  • Sharing News and Updates

Users are able to share information about their diagnosis. They are able to journal about their medical milestones and are able to share memories and photos with their family and friends.

  • Assembling Your Community

With automatic updates, family and friends are immediately informed about what is happening. CaringBridge also allows a user’s social community to create personal fundraising with a GoFundMe account. It also allows family and friends to donate in honor of their loved one through a Tribute Donation.

  • Providing Emotional Support

Family and friends are able to showcase their support by posting on their loved one’s website. They are able to send messages, photos, and videos.

  • Creating a Private and Ad-Free Environment

Users have complete control over their CaringBridge website. Through privacy controls, they can control if they want their website to be searchable on the internet.

CaringBridge can be a valuable tool for mesothelioma patients to update their family and friends about their diagnosis and treatment. The best thing about CaringBridge is that it is free. Anyone can create a website for themselves or for a loved one that might be going through a difficult time.

The Success of CaringBridge

CaringBridge is a nonprofit organization that was created by, Sona Mehring, whenever her good friends had a premature baby. Instead of making tons of phone calls to family and friends, she decided to create a website. By doing this, Mehring was able to spread the word quicker when updates were available about the baby’s health.

The website was first created in 1997 and didn’t officially become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization until 2002. Since the birth of CaringBridge:

  • Users have created more that half a million websites
  • One in nine people in the United States use it to support their loved ones
  • It has touched the lives of people in 236 countries and territories around the world

Currently, CaringBridge has more than 2,500 volunteers. Without the dedication from both its volunteers and donors, this environment would not exist. There are many ways that you can support CaringBridge and can get involved as well.
